General Questions Answered

Do I need a computer to use exerspy™?
Yes, you will need to use a computer that has high-speed internet access in order to utilize the exerspy™ system.

What are the technical requirements to run the exerspy™ program?
The computer you use to access the Internet will need to have the following features:

  • PC with USB Port (multiprocessor systems not supported)
  • Microsoft Windows Vista, XP SP2 , or 2000 SP4 (32 bit operating systems only. 64 bit operating systems are not supported at this time)
  • 256MB RAM or higher
  • System software
  • Internet access (high-speed preferred)
  • Internet Explorer 7.0 or later or Firefox browsers 3 or later
  • Internet Settings: allow cookies, pop-ups and Javascript
  • Required Plug Ins : FREE Adobe Acrobat Reader, FREE Adobe Flash Player

Is the program supported by mac?
Currently, our software/hardware does not support the Mac Operating System. If you have a newer Mac which features the Intel Core Duo Processor, you can install one of the following software applications (these will allow you to then install and run the Windows XP Operating System on your Mac). What happens when my initial 3 month subscription expires?
There are several renewal options currently available, if you decide to extend your subscription:

  • Month to month recurring (R79)
  • 1 month (R79.00)
  • 3 months (R237)
  • 12 months (R799)

Is there a warranty that comes with the armband?
Yes, the armband comes with a one-year warranty. Please note: water damage is not covered by the warranty.

A friend gave me their old exerspy™. What do I do now?
You will need to purchase a web-only program. With this you'll receive 1 exerspy™ coaching sessions to help you learn how to use the program as well as a 3-month web subscription (see subscription renewal options above). During your session, you'll just need to tell your Leanbody™ coach that you actually have an armband, and he/she will make any necessary adjustments to your account.

What is the Return Policy?
exerspy program with armband: If you're not happy with your exerspy, and you purchased it online at www.exerspy.co.za or www.leanBodies.co.za, simply contact our Customer Service department at 083 460-8707. If you purchased your exerspy in a fitness facility or from another retailer, you will need to contact that retailer in order to return your exerspy. Retailers’ return policies may differ from our return policy.

Unopened armbands: If you purchased your armband from www.exerspy.co.za, you may return your unopened and unused armband within 30 days of your activation date, we will refund your purchase price less the cost of completed coaching sessions and shipping.

exerspy Web Only program (no armband): No refunds on the Web Only Program.

exerspy Subscription Renewals: All subscription renewals are final and non-refundable.

Can I use the exerspy™ system online without the exerspy™ armband?
Yes. Actually, the online program is the foundation of the exerspy™ system. based on your body mass change, the system will determine your actual calorie deficit (or surplus) on a daily basis, based on a one-week average. To help you stay on track without the exerspy™ device, there's an easy-to-use food logging function with a food autosearch so you can keep track of calories taken in. There's also an exercise calculator with hundred of activities to choose from to determine how many calories you've burned through the exerspy™ online interface you can customize and print your menus as well as view and print your exercise programs. There are also several informative articles to help you stay on track.

Can one exerspy™ armband be used by multiple people?
No, we do not recommend multiple users on one exerspy™ armband. each armband is linked to a particular exerspy™ online program. Having multiple users wearing the same device would negate the accuracy and effectiveness of the overall exerspy™ program.

Do I have to wear the exerspy™ device 24 hours a day?
We recommend wearing the armband as much as possible during waking hours. the more you wear your exerspy™, the more accurate and effective you will be at maintaining your calorie deficit goal. During low activity level periods of time (such as sleeping), the program will estimate your calorie burn at rest, based on your body parameters, so it is not 100% necessary to wear to sleep.

How do I wear the exerspy™?
the exerspy™ is designed to be worn on the back of the upper left arm (the tricep), against the skin and under your clothes.
Make sure that your upper right arm is clean and dry. You should not wear any lotion or body oil that touches the exerspy™. Strap the exerspy™ onto the back of your upper right arm with the logo facing up. Adjust the strap so that it fits on your arm comfortably, and secure the pull-tab. flex the arm a few times to make sure that the strap is neither too tight not too loose. it should be snug, but comfortable. be careful not to over-tighten the exerspy™. if you feel constricted or loss of circulation, simply loosen the strap and re-fasten it to a more comfortable setting.

Why is the exerspy™ more accurate than a pedometer?
The exerspy™ is more accurate than a pedometer for calculating calories burned because it is "watching" your body from four different perspectives. A pedometer only measures steps. in addition to measuring motion and steps, the exerspy™ is able to see how much you are sweating, your skin temperature and the rate at which heat is being dissipated from your body. these additional physiological parameters give the exerspy™ a more complete picture of what your body is doing and its level of exertion, all of which means a much more accurate estimation of your calories burned.

Does the exerspy™ measure my heart rate?
Not at this time.

Does the exerspy™ come in any other colors?
Not at this time.

Can I get the exerspy™ wet?
The exerspy™ should be protected from water and should be removed before showering, bathing or swimming.

Does the exerspy™ armband track what I eat?
No, the armband itself tracks the calories you burn, but not the calories you eat. Your calories consumed are calculated by the exerspy™ interface based on your weekly body mass change. To better stay on track of your calorie input, the program also offers an easy-to-use food log so you can monitor the calories you eat throughout the day.



Digital Device Questions Answered

Do I need a computer to use exerspy™?
No. The display provides a visual output for your armband. It is not a monitor in itself. It will only update and present your armband data when the armband is on your arm and "on-body" (sensing).
Note: You can still use the display as a time piece when the display says "not in sync".

Can I change the time on the display when it's synced to the armband?
The display receives its time from the armband. You can only change the display time when the display is not in sync. When not in sync, you can change time by holding down the reset TRIP button and using the mode and view buttons as up and down buttons.

How often is the information on the display updated?
The display receives and presents your armband data once a minute. All parameters (calories, steps, activity) update at the same time. If the display says "NOT IN SYNC" it will not update.

Note: After the armband and display lose sync there is a 5 minute period where the display will continue to transmit and try to find the armband. During this period, the display will appear in sync. After 5 minutes of lost contact with the armband the display will show "NOT IN SYNC". If the display device synced in real time, the battery would last approximately a week.

How do I initially sync the display and armband?
For initial use, hold down the mode and view buttons simultaneously until the screen scrolls "HELLO". After the initial sync, you only need to press the mode button to resync with the armband. The quickest way to sync is to press the armband button and then press Mode on the display.

Quick tip: You can re-sync the display with the armband by first pressing the reset button on your armband, then press the Mode button on the display.

I have my armband on but my display says "NOT IN SYNC". Why?

  1. Armband may be off-body: Make sure your armband is secured snugly against the back of your upper arm. You can test whether the armband is on-body by pressing the armband button. If on-body it will beep and give a short vibration. If the armband is not on-body it may be because:
    1. The battery is dead. Press the armband button for status
    2. The memory is full. Press the armband for status.
  2. Lost contact: If your armband loses contact with the body, it will automatically break contact with the display. After the armband is back on-body, simply press the armband button and then the mode button on the display to resync.
  3. Interference: The display uses a radio frequency similar to many wireless networks, cellular and cordless phones. These products could temporarily interfere with the display, breaking its connection with the armband. Simply press the armband button and then the mode button on the display to resync.
  4. Range: Make sure your display is within 3 feet of your armband.

How do I use my display to view another armband's data?

  1. Make sure your display is within 3 feet of the armband whose data you wish to view.
  2. Press the button on the new armband. This will tell it to begin looking for a new display.
  3. Hold down the mode and view buttons on your display. This will tell the display to "look" for a new armband.
  4. So long as the new armband has not been paired to another display in the last 10 minutes, it will communicate to your display and show the data for the new armband.
    Note: If the new armband has been connected to another display in the last 10 minutes, simply hold down the new armband’s button for 5 seconds or until it beeps. This will make it "forget" the previous display and look for your display

Will I lose my display values (today, yesterday, trip, etc) when I upload my armband?
No. The values are processed and stored in the armband and will remain across uploads. They may, however, be lost if you lose battery power and fail to charge the battery.

Sometimes the calorie, physical activity, and steps information on the display does not match what the website is reporting. Why?
Human physiology often has a delayed response. For example, exercise started now may not show up as increased body temperature for a few minutes. The display is giving instant readings. When you upload, the computer takes account of the delayed response and “corrects” for this phenomena. This could result in a lower or higher value being reported on the computer. Note: If you see a discrepancy that is greater than 5%, please contact exerspy Technical Support at 083 460-8707

I just re-synced my armband and display. Why is the "MSG!" (Target message) displayed?
The armband continues to collect your personal data even when the display is not worn. Once you resync it is possible that the armband has hit one or more of your targets since you last wore the display. Upon resyncing, the display will notify you that you hit those targets even if the targets were met much earlier and while the display was off.

Can I turn the beep off?
Yes. Hold down the light button until the display scrolls "BEEP OFF". You can turn the beep back on by repeating this action. This action is for the button beeps only. Message alerts will still beep and cannot be turned off.

Will using the display impact the life of the battery in my armband?
Yes. Depending on how frequently you sync your display to your armband, you may have to recharge your armband more often.

Why doesn't the display sync automatically when I upload to the web program?
Technically, when the armband uploads to the web program, the armband goes "off-body." The digital display can only be synced to the armband when it is on-body, which means that you must re-sync the display to the armband after uploading.
